Russia is a land of transcendent. By far the world’s largest country, it covers nearly twice the region of Canada, the second largest. It prolonged across the whole of northern Asia and the eastern third of Europe, spanning 11 time zones and incorporating a great range of environments and landforms, from deserts to semiarid steppes to deep forests and Arctic tundra. Russia contains Europe’s longest river, the Volga, and its largest lake, Ladoga.
Russia also is home to the world’s deepest lake, Baikal, and the country recorded the world’s lowest temperature outside the North and South poles. Russia’s climate is greatest, with hostile winters that have several times famously saved the country from foreign conquer. Although the climate adds a layer of difficulty to daily life, the land is a lavish source of crops and materials, including extensive reserves of oil, gas, and precious metals.
