In December last year, Nepal’s former national cricket team captain Sandeep Lamichhane was convicted by a court of raping a minor.
Cricket player Sandeep Lamichhane was sentenced to eight years in prison by the Kathmandu District Court on Wednesday January 10, 2024, for rape. The cricket player is fined Rs300,000 by the Kathmandu District Court and is also required to reimburse the victim with Rs 200,000.
Popular Leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane of Nepal has been found guilty of raping a minor and has been sentenced to eight years in prison. As a result, he will not be playing cricket for the time being. Fifteen months after the case was filed on September 6, 2022, the verdict was declared on Wednesday, January 10, 2024.
After multiple delays, Lamichhane was found guilty of rape last month, allowing him to resume his cricket career. After a hearing today, the Shishir Raj Dhakal bench delivered the verdict, which included eight years in prison, fines, and compensation, according to court official Ramu Sharma.
Sandeep Lamichhane is preparing to move the High Court saying that the Kathmandu district court’s verdict is not in his favor. Sandeep Lamichhane will not be arrested for around 100 days as there will be an appeal time in High Court for up to 100 days even though Kathmandu District Court declared the final decision.
The 23-year-old has been the face of cricket in Nepal and was the only player from the country to take part in prominent Twenty20 leagues across the world. Lamichhane has played a significant role in his ascent to the top of Nepali cricket leagues worldwide, where he is now in high demand.
He holds the record for the world’s second-fastest bowler to capture 50 ODI wickets and the third-fastest to race to 50 T20I wickets.
