Growing up in the cricket-loving environment of New South Wales, Sowter developed a keen interest in the game early on and worked diligently to master the art of leg spin, a craft known for its complexity and strategic impact on the game. A leg spinner, he made his debut for Middlesex in a T20 match in May 2015, taking 2 wickets for 2 runs in the four balls he delivered. In 2024, Sowter was selected to play in the Nepal Premier League (NPL) for the Kathmandu Gurkhas.
